This magazine is inspired by Pokémon. Unlike the previous Pachirisu project, this project is written with current fans in mind. When researching any existing Pokémon magazines, the only ones I could find were unofficial trading card game magazines from the 90's, which are outdated in terms of both information and layout. I wanted to bring a modern flair for this Pokémon-themed magazine.
I named the magazine after Volt Tackle, the name of a special attack that only Pikachu can use. The Japanese text above the magazine title (ボルテッカー) also reads "Volt Tackle". I leaned in more on the crackly, electric design elements like the font for the title. The background image is official art depicting Lumiose City, the location of the (at the time of making) upcoming game Pokémon Legends Z-A, which is the featured article for this issue.
One of the articles in the magazine. I wrote all of the articles myself for Volt Tackle. This one talks about why I think the games based in the Alola region are not as bad as fans say they were. I included some screenshots that I took in my game, while the other images are official art. I included the crackly shapes across the bottom of every page to lean in on the electricity theme. It actually says "Volt Tackle" over and over in a funky font called Crackly!
I experimented with a couple of animated logos for Volt Tackle. The first two are fairly similar, but the third one is much different. Still, with all three of them, I wanted to lean in on the electric theme with the lightning bolts and the crackly border around the text to resemble flowing electricity.
(Please note that these were all designed to be used in the 1:1 ratio; the black borders are only included so that the animations would upload to YouTube as a video and not a short, which I would not be able to embed here.)
